Line Up Spotlight: Vampire Weekend

by admin on 2010/08/14

Up next in our Line Up Spotlight is Vampire Weekend who are playing Benicassim 2010 on Friday 16th July.

Recently debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 for their latest album “Contra”, the indie rock band Vampire Weekend is proving their worth with their opening sequence for the box office hit Step Brothers, in which their earlier debut single A-Punk was featured. Vampire Weekend comprised of Ezra Koenig, lead vocals and guitar, Rostam Batmanglij, keyboards, backing vocals and guitar, Chris Tomson, percussion, and Chris Baio, bass guitar, formed in 2006. The band members met at Columbia University, in their home town of New York, where they began to create their afro-inspired new age indie rock. They signed on with XL Recordings in 2007 after local buzz thrust them into the spot light and recently have performed on MTV’s unplugged on January 9, 2010. The band has so far produced only two albums, their self-proclaimed “Vampire Weekend” which was their debut album in 2008 and their recent 2010 “Contra”. Their latest release “Jonathan Low” will make its entry into the mainstream audience, for anxious fans, on the soundtrack of Eclipse, part of the Twilight Saga, this June.

Don’t let the hype confuse you, although this band may seem the typical cliché of young boys appealing to the teenage girl crowd, by hopping on the paranormal bandwagon, the members of Vampire Weekend are more than pretty faces. Complex blends of melodies with well thought out lyrics give the band a depth that has them facing comparisons to Paul Simon early in their careers. “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” both a song and style they define as their own, provides eclectic percussion and a mix of crooning that is distinctly Vampire Weekend.

Their biggest fan bases are located in the UK where their debut album peaked at 15 on the UK Album Charts and in the United States. In fact, according to Vampire Weekend’s website, they are currently preparing to launch their next North American Tour. It will start on August 28th. The Dum Dum Girls and Beach House will accompany them on their tour.

Before heading off on tour, they have blogged about being excited to perform at the Benicassim festival in Spain, that is taking place on the weekend of July 15th through 18th. They are rising quickly out of their home town, New York, to far away international stages.
